Dweck’s work documented how praise for talent (“you’re so smart”) tends to produce a fixed mindset — students avoid challenging tasks because failure would threaten their identity. Praise for effort and strategy (“you worked through this carefully”) produces a growth mindset, where difficulty is read as information rather than judgement.

The effect is largest precisely where it matters most: when students encounter material at the edge of their ability.
