Flow is not mystical. Csikszentmihalyi identified its preconditions precisely: a task just above current skill, immediate feedback, the possibility of failure, clear goals, and — crucially — an environment that does not interrupt. Interruptions are the single most reliable flow-killers.
For a study tool, this has uncompromising consequences. No modal popups during writing. No notifications. No gamified streak reminders that pull attention. No AI volunteering suggestions that were not asked for.
Fluera’s canvas is designed to disappear during writing. Toolbars auto-hide. The AI is silent unless summoned. The infinite canvas removes scroll and pagination — the most mundane forms of interruption. Input latency is kept under 15 ms because latency above that threshold is a form of interruption too — it breaks the loop between hand and thought.
